Martin Hillam

Personal Profile

Martin started training at Cleckheaton Shotokan Karate Club in 2006 under senior instructor Sensei Mike Cowburn. His training progressed through the years with attendance on English Shotokan Academy events and competitions with the achievement of Shodan in 2014 awarded by Sensei Michaylo Fedyk 7th Dan and Sensei Geoff Beasley 7th Dan.

Martin continued to train at Cleckheaton until 2016 when, along with Senseis Nick Shaw and Andy Woolveridge, he took over the running of the club.

Martin is proud to have trained with many senior karateka, including the Chairman of the KSKA Sensei Dirk Heene 8th Dan and senior members of the English Shotokan Academy. He has also trained with leading European Kase Ha Senseis, namely Velibor Dimitrijevic and Pascal Lecourt, with whom Martin went to Luxembourg to train, and more recently the newest members of the KSKA Shihankai, Senseis Nico Ibscher and Juan Pablo Delgado.

Sensei Mike Cowburn has always encouraged students to train with other instructors leading Martin to train with world renowned martial artists such as Guru Rick Faye of the JKD association. This training allowed Martin not only to see how other martial arts were performed, such as Jeet Kune Do, but how he could use this to improve his own karate.

Martin, along with Nick & Andy, strive to keep the club alive as they continue to follow the teachings of Shihan Taiji Kase and endeavour to follow the concept of the founder of the ESA Sensei Steve Cattle - we simply train to get better!
